The Applegarth Gardens, extending over more than
three hectares, were established in the early 1940’s by
Herbert Wilson, the founder of the Wilson-Rountree chocolate and
sweet factory (now Nestlé) in East London. Epitomising
the beauty of Hogsback, they have matured into one of the finest
temperate climate gardens in South Africa, admired by the many
visitors from here and abroad who come to enjoy the beautiful
and stimulating environment. The Applegarth Nursery is known in
particular for its collection of rare and unusual temperate garden
plants not found easily in South African nurseries. They include
many varieties of Rhododendrons, both the evergreen and deciduous

Applegarth Self-Catering Cottage is a charming thatched rondavel
sleeping two adults - double and single bed (Limited additional
accommodation is available). There is a fully equipped kitchenette
and a modern bathroom with shower. A cosy wood fire is provided.

HISTORY of APPLEGARTH
Applegarth is a County of Dumfriesshire in Scotland. Herbert
Wilson (the originator of the Gardens) married a young girl from
this County. To make her feel at home he named the property Applegarth
and built a stone house like the houses in Scotland with which
his young bride would have been familiar. The property was essentially
a retreat for the Wilsons. Mr. Wilson was the founder of the Wilson-Rountree
chocolate/sweet factory (now Nestle’s) in East London. If
you have lived in South Africa for some time, you may therefore
have contributed towards the creation of these gardens!
Directions to accommodation
Arriving from the South, turn into Nutwoods Drive at the second
turn to the left shortly above the Arminel Hotel. Turn left again
immediately into Orchard Lane. From here it is 1 km to Applegarth.
