Cradled in a meander of the Sundays River, Graaff-Reinet is an
oasis in the desolate surrounding landscape, practically every
visitor remarks on its unique old-world character.
Graaff-Reinet is situated en route from Johannesburg to Cape
Town in the Eastern Cape Province. Many people stop over while
traveling to or from the Garden Route. Graaff-Reinet also boasts
with the Valley of Desolation, which is a geographical phenomenon
that has been declared a National Monument. Other highlights include,
game viewing and numerous museums in town. For the more adventurous
there's quad bikes and micro light flights.
Graaff-Reinet grew slowly in the late 1700's as the carpenters,
smiths, wagon wrights, saddlers and peddlers (smouse) brought
their trade to the outpost of the colony. By the middle 19th century
Graaff-Reinet become the most important trading centre in the
interior. The first farmers who had settled in the area in the
1770's had recorded disputes between them and the Sun (Bushmen).
Graaff-Reinet has also strong connections with the Great Trek
(1834-1837). The Andries Pretorius Monument stands outside Graaff-Reinet,
on the Middleburg Road. He was one of the famous leaders of the
Great Trek that had farmed in the area before setting off across
the Orange River in their quest for freedom from the British authorities.
During the mid 1800's Graaff-Reinet was known for wool and still
today the headquarters of the Merino Stud Breeders Association
of South Africa is in town.
Water furrows run along the streets where the water from the
Van Ryneveld's Pass Dam, now Nqeba Dam, was diverted into each
house's garden. The irrigation scheme was formulated by Andries
Stokenstrom, landdrost (magistrate) of the town from 1815 to 1828.
Gideon Scheepers, was executed and buried in Graaff-Reinet on
18 January 1902, a few months before the end of the Anglo-Boer
War. He had been the commander of 150 men who had raided and disrupted
the British War Effort. He had seriously taken ill with fever
and asked his men to make their escape and leave him in a farmhouse
near Prince Albert. He was found guilty of numerous charges, including
murder in Graaff-Reinet and sentenced to death. He was buried
together with the chair in which he was shot. The same night he
was exhumed and reburied in a shallow grave in the Sunday's River.
The second grave and his remains were never found.
