Accommodation in Machadodorp / Mpumalanga )
THE FARMHOUSE
The Farmhouse is situated on the very lip of the African
Escarpment on the summit of the Skurweberg in the Mpumalanga Drakensburg.
This is a luxury very cute fully equipped and serviced lodge sleeping
6 adults in 3 double en suit bedrooms and 4 children in 2 bunk beds
in complete privacy. The comprehensively equipped kitchen has a
gas stove and microwave and comes with coffee, tea, and fresh farm
milk a good collection of spices and condiments..
The house and the views it commands, has been renovated and expanded
into the present dwelling, with an open plan Kitchen, dinning
and sitting area with a cozy fireplace. Satellite TV and video,
and a comprehensive library complete this country retreat. This
old stone house was originally built in the 1850's as a rest place
for the wagon trails on rout to the goldfields of Barberton, before
they attempted the hazardous 'Hells Kloof Pass'.
WALKING THE FARM
We have not laid out 'marked' walks, you have the privilege to
wander as you please, however please let me know that you wish
to walk so that I can give you directions to the spectacular places,
routes and the energy requirements each walk entails, from boot
camp march to slow stroll in the bush.
Breakfast on the hill and picnics can be arranged. We have all
the gear like rucksacks and walking sticks, to make for a great
adventure. Just tell Norah or Poppy and we will pack it for you,
nothing like a boiled eggy and coffee with bikkies on top of the
Skurweberg. Bring your own walking shoes :-)
FISHING
Fishing on our private dams is on a catch and return basis, trophy
and cooking fish will be charged at R55 per kilo. We have 2 rods,
one with a sinking line and the other with floating. Flies will
be charged out at R5 for every fly lost, you are honor bound to
confess
these losses
For the serious fisherman there is very good river fishing in
the Skurweberg Valley. Our guests enjoy access to this, but trips
must be arranged in advance and will incur a R100 rod fee for
river trout and yellow fish.
HORSE TRAILS
The Skurweberg is a hackers (cross country riding) paradise and
we have some really spectacular rides.
1. THE SUMMIT TRAIL. From the paddock and right around the summit
of the Skurweberg and back to the paddock. 3 hours in the saddle,
with a picnic supplied (coffee, tea, juice, sandwiches, fruit
etc. bring your own beer).
2. THE WATERFALL TRAIL. From the paddock to the falls and back,
1 hour in the saddle with a picnic at the head of the falls (coffee,
tea, juice, sandwiches and fruit etc. bring your own beer).
TRACTOR/Back of the bakkie DRIVE TO THE WATERFALL
This is a fun drive to the waterfall and back on the trailer of
the tractor, (for smaller parties we will use the bakkie), bring
your camera wine and champagne and be amazed! Great for those
"wise" enough to keep off the horses and can be combined
with the Waterfall horse trail, half on half off.
ART TOURS/ LESSONS
Francis your amiable host is an artist of little acclaim but quite
skilled in many media from watercolors to oils.
R175 per session of 3 hours. Please arrange in advance
IN THE AREA
1. BADPLAAS HOT VOLCANIC SPRINGS AND SPA. This a great experience
though I
have a lot to say about the utilitarian fascist architecture the
resort has chosen. The waters are amazing and revitalizing-take
a book, swimming costume and towels. They have a full beauty and
massage service that I have not used but is supposed to be quite
pleasant and safe. There are rides for the kids, restaurants,
tearooms and hot pools this is a large resort with horse trails
through their small game reserve, which has rhino and antelopes.
We have a concession for our guests so that you pay only R20 entrance
instead of the usual R45. Get your voucher from me.
2. SONGIMVILLA GAME RESERVE Situated about 40 minutes drive
from the lodge, this is a spectacular 60,000 hectare Mpumalanga
Parks Board Reserve with the big 4 (no lion) so you can walk and
have a picnic in one of the least known and most spectacular reserves
so this has to be booked well in advance! Game drive and picnic
R150pp. You haven't lived till you have toasted the hippo
in the Komati
3. 4X4 AND MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL. Bring your own gear and start
from the lodge, down the 'Hells Kloof Pass' along the Komati Gorge,
half way stop at the Komati Gorge Restaurant and back via the
Bloemfontein road, 66 kilometers of wonder.
