Nestling beneath a blanket of Knobthorn trees
rests Safari Lodge, originally a hunting lodge. In unwavering
African tradition, the cottages at Safari Lodge are thatched,
creating a bond with their surroundings. Its charm lies in that
it has remained small and intimate, accommodating a maximum of
ten guests in five chalets. Relaxed and in harmony with its surroundings,
Safari Lodge is enjoyed for its rich diversity of animal and bird
life which can be easily observed from each cottage. Regrettably,
children under the age of 12 are not permitted at Safari Lodge.
Game Lodge's famed cuisine is echoed at Safari Lodge, whether
it be a hearty breakfast to begin yet another glorious day in
the wilds of Africa, lunch with a view over the lake from the
tree-skewered timber deck or in the authentic outdoor boma, an
indulgent dinner over which to recount the day's adventures.
Directions to accommodation
Route via Nelspruit / White River / Hazyview / Bushbuckridge
From Johannesburg, go past the airport to Witbank onto the N4
through to Nelspruit.
Take the R40 from Nelspruit to White River and proceed 53km to
Hazyview.
Stay on the R40 towards Bushbuckridge.
From Hazyview it’s 62 km until you turn right towards Acornhoek
(Manyeleti / Thulamahashe
turn off).
Follow the tar road for 33km until you find Hluvukane Petrol Station
on your right hand side.
The tar road ends here & becomes gravel.
After the petrol station, continue for 2km till the road splits
– turn right. (You will see a brown Sabi Sand sign &
other lodges names like Chitwa Chitwa, Elephant Plains, Djuma
etc.)
Take the first turn to your left (appr. 300m).
After +/- 5 km turn right (follow all Sabi Sand signs).
Follow through a few small towns until you find a T junction after
another 6,5 km – turn left.
You will reach the “Gowrie Gate” after 7 km where
you will have to pay R60 entrance fee.
Once you are through the gate, be sure to follow the correct Chitwa
Chitwa signs, indicating either CHITWA CHITWA GAME LODGE or CHITWA
CHITWA SAFARI LODGE.
From the Acornhoek turnoff to the gate is appr. an hour.
Route via Belfast / Dullstroom / Lydenburg / Hoedspruit
Take the R22 from Johannesburg – past Witbank and Middelburg
to Belfast.
Turn left onto the R540. Pass Dullstroom to Lydenburg.
From Lydenburg take the R36 to Orighstad.
Still on the R36 pass through the Strijdom Tunnel.
Continue on R527 Hoedspruit road for 15km.
Turn right to R531 Klaserie. Continue on the R531 towards the
Orpen Gate.
After 30km, you’ll see “SA Wildlife College”
and brown “SABI SAND” signs where you turn right.
The gravel road begins here.
From here to the GOWRIE gate takes appr. 30 minutes.
You’ll go through a small farm gate and follow all the brown
“SABI SAND” signs.(You will also see other lodges
names like Elephant Plains, Djuma etc.)
You’ll get to a T-junction with Hluvukane Petrol Station
in front of you – turn left.
Continue for 2km till the road splits – turn right. (You

Chitwa Chitwa, Elephant Plains, Djuma etc.)
Take the first turn to your left (appr. 300m).
