Mabote, Sotho for "small strong river",
is situated in the southern ravine of the farm, Groothoek, approx.
64km west of Potgietersrus. Mabote opened in1998 and is run by
the Peens family, the camp is beautifully situated along the river
and overlooks a vast rock face. Other areas of interest around
the camp are: stunning waterfalls, hiking trails as well as the
Rock Art from which the Mabote Emblem was adopted...Mabote is
situated close to the town of Mokopane (Potgietersrus) and is
approximately three and a half hours from Johannesburg, and two
and a half hours from the Zambesi Intersection[ Pretoria/Tswane].
The camp is situated in a malaria-free unspoiled landscape and
nestles in the shadows of the majestic Waterberg Mountains, and
has spectacular scenery, rich vegetation and unspoilt ravines.
The Main Camp comfortably accommodates twelve guests in three
seperate huts with four guests in each. Although this camp is
ideal for larger groups, the huts can also be booked seperately
by smaller groups or families. This camp also contains two fully
equipped kitchens with gas stoves and refrigerators. Each hut
has its own boma for evenings around the barbeque or traditional
"potjie". Self catering
The camp further boasts a deck with a lovely view of the river,
ablution facilities with hot water showers and flush toilets.
The Koko Chalet has ample room for six guests. The main bedroom
contains a queen size bed, while the second bedroom has two single
beds plus a bunk bed. Both rooms have en-suite bathrooms, hot
water showers, basins and flush toilets. The fully equipped kitchen
has a refrigerator, gas stove, kitchen counter and bar stools.
The large fire place lends itself perfectly to leisurely visits
around the glowing coals and guests are welcome to use it for
"indoor" barbeques, although the chalet also has its
own boma as well as a large open deck with a lovely view of the
river and awe-inspiring sandstone cliffs. Self catering
Berg Camp is ideal for those who want to get even closer to nature,
offering spectacular views of the farm and surrounding area. Guests
provide their own tents/caravans and firewood,dish washing soap/cloth
and have a choice of ten campsites. The shared boma accommodates
up to 40 people with ease. Also provided for are work surfaces,
sink, ablution facilities with hot water showers and flush toilets.
Self catering
At Mabote our commitment is to make sure that you experience
comfort, nature and exclusivity! We want you to enjoy the sights
and sounds of the magnificent area. Below are a few general points
to remember about the camp:
Fishing : Strictly catch and release.
There is no electricity and limited cell phone reception is available.
Pets are welcome at own risk (please bring their own bedding)
Limited firewood provided, additional wood can be bought.
Workers sweep, make beds, do dishes daily and light the lamps
at night.
The nearest petrol/diesel station, hospital, shops or doctors
are in Potgietersrus 64 kilometres away.
Accommodation Facilities
Walking trails to waterfalls and Rock Art. (guides are
available on request for a fee)
Angling and canoeing - canoes, life-jackets and braai facilities
provided, fishing gear and bait are not. All water activities
are rain dependant
Bird watching
20 kilometre scenic drive to look-out point (Bakkies only)
Three 4x4 courses between 2 and 4 hours each (terrain includes
marshes, koppies, sand, ditches, rivers and embankments. Ten vehicles
can be accommodated)
Clubs / organized 4x4 groups welcome
Mountain and quad bikes welcome - conditions apply.
